Friday Followings: Be Thou My Vision

Happy New Year Gloria Dei,
One of the hymns we often sing in worship is called “Be Thou My Vision”. That phrase alone is a great prayer and theme for the New Year. “Be Thou My Vision Lord” means that we want God to lead us; we want to be in line with God’s vision for our lives; we want to seek and pursue the things of God above all else.
I particularly like the lyrics to verse two of this hymn. It goes like this:
Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word; I ever with thee and thou with me Lord.
Thou my soul’s shelter, thou my high tower, raise thou me heav’n-ward, O Pow’r of my pow’r.
Yes, what a great promise. God’s wisdom, God’s word, God’s presence, God’s shelter, with us now and forever. It’s the promise of Christmas, Immanuel, God with us, that goes on throughout the year and always. If at times you don’t know what to pray, simply pray the title of the hymn: Be Thou My Vision Lord.
Two reminders: First, I’m excited that over the next four months we’ll be preaching through the Gospel of Mark. Within weekend worship, and on Wednesdays, we’ll discover the Way of Jesus as found in this fast moving gospel. For this weekend please read Mark 1:1-15.
Secondly, we are encouraging everyone to take the challenge to read through the entire Bible in one year. We have reading schedules at the Welcome Center at church and on our website, and we’ll have instructions to download an app so you can read right from your phone, or other mobile device, if you’d like. If you sign up as a participant we’ll send out periodic blogs and/or questions to ask as you read, and you can even join in to an online group conversation if you so desire.
God’s good news of salvation as found in Jesus Christ guides us and gives light to our paths.
Be Thou My Vision Lord. See you in worship!
