Advent is the beginning of a new church calendar year. We begin in Advent because as the prophets of old foretold, the Messiah is coming. Advent is traditionally a time of waiting with hopeful expectation for the Messiah to come. As Christians, we believe the Messiah has already come. Jesus is Emmanuel, or God-with-us.

Advent is that season right before Christmas where we, too, practice waiting in hopeful expectation. We now believe that the Messiah comes every time the Word is proclaimed and we share in the real presence of Christ at communion and baptism.
