You Need the Church and the Church Needs You

Hello Gloria Dei,

I returned this week from a two-week vacation. I spent a bit of time in Arizona with my two grown kids; I connected with some old friends; and of course, I got in a few rounds of golf. I was then able to have a few off days here in Sioux Falls, getting some things done around the yard, reading a good book, and just enjoying life.

And guess what? Everything here at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church continued without a hitch. I’ll bet you didn’t even miss me. The Senior Pastor of a large church is gone for a few weeks, and everything goes just fine.

Yet, what would happen if Gloria Dei went weeks without our volunteers? What would happen if our kitchen servers never showed up? What would happen if we were without any of our Church School teachers and small group Confirmation leaders and worship volunteers? What would happen if no one stepped up to help with all the outreach programs at places like the Banquet and Laundry with Love? What if our choirs and musicians stopped giving of their time to make music? Without volunteers, so much of our ministry would come to a screeching halt.

Weeks without a Senior Pastor or weeks without volunteers. Which of these would have more impact on the ministry of Christ’s church? Clearly, the absence of volunteers would impact the church more than the absence of the Sr. Pastor.

My point is this: You need the church AND the church needs you. The church is the one place in our society where you hear over and over again the message that God loves you, forgives you, and gives your life its overarching purpose. The church is a family in which you and I receive support and share in fellowship and learning. So yes, you need the church.

But the church needs you too. At a family gathering, if some members of the family are absent, their presence is missed. So it is with the church family. When you are not present in worship and fellowship, your presence is missed. Someone may have needed your kind words and smile.
In the body of Christ, the pastors and staff are important, yes. But much more than the pastors and staff, all of us are urgently needed.

As we move toward our fall programming, I want to ask you to commit to being present in worship as often as you are able. Make it a priority for you and your family. And beyond worship, you are needed in so many areas. Choose to volunteer. It will make your life better, and it will make the life of this church family better too.

We are always in need of people to volunteer to assist in worship, or to go beyond our walls into the community in our mission and outreach programs. We are currently in need of more Church School teachers, and the list goes on and on and on.

Please give the church office a call and let us know where you might be interested in helping and we will steer you in the right direction. Within the body of Christ there are no insignificant jobs. You have a crucial part to play in the Kingdom of God. Your skills and talents are needed.

Thanks for being involved in the mission of Jesus Christ in and through the Gloria Dei family of faith.

P.S. A gentle reminder that if you haven’t yet registered your children for Church School either on Sundays or Wednesdays, see the link below.

P.P.S. In worship this week we will hear an update regarding the Ukrainian family that we are sponsoring.

See you in worship,

Pastor Tim
