Believing Without Seeing

Hello Gloria Dei,

For this week in worship, please read John 4:46-54. It is a fascinating account of a man who is desperate for Jesus’ help. The man, a royal government official, has a young son who is sick, even to the point of near death. This man has probably never met Jesus before, but he has undoubtedly heard about him. As I said, he is desperate, so he’ll do anything to try and save his son.

The man travels more than 20 miles to see Jesus. His hope is that Jesus will travel back with him to heal his son. When the man arrives, Jesus decides not to travel back with the man. After a brief exchange, Jesus tells him to “Go back home” alone, but with a promise. Jesus promises the man, saying “Your son lives.”

Imagine being that man. You traveled a long way to get Jesus to come back with you, and now all you have is a promise… a word from the Lord. What thoughts would you have on your return trip home? Would you believe this man that you had never met before?

The man goes with faith, and his son is healed, precisely at the time Jesus spoke the promise.

This man believes even before he sees. This is a common theme in John’s gospel. Do you remember Jesus’ words to Thomas after the resurrection? “Thomas, have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.” (John 20:29)

How is your walk of faith? Is it possible for you and me to trust Jesus, even when we can’t see or fully understand all that is ahead of us? Is it possible to have faith even when our prayers seem to go unanswered at times?

I encourage you to be in worship, either in person or online, as we explore this story and the themes found within it. In the meantime, keep your eyes on Jesus and look to him as you journey through life by faith in a God who loves you deeply.

See you in worship!
