Giving Witness to Jesus

Hello Gloria Dei,

This weekend in worship we experience another one of Jesus’ Holy Encounters. Last week we focused on a fascinating conversation between Jesus and the Jewish religious leader Nicodemus. This week Jesus is out in Samaria among the non-Jews. We get let in on another fascinating conversation, this time between Jesus and a woman drawing water from a well.

I encourage you to read about it in John 4:1-42.

I won’t recount the whole story here as I know you’ll read it. However, it has something to do with the living water that Jesus provides. It is not physical water. It is spiritual water. Life giving water. Purpose-filled water.

What I want you to notice is the effect that this water (a relationship with Jesus) has on the Woman at the Well. When she encounters Jesus, she is changed. And she ultimately runs back to her town and tells all the people about Jesus and the life he provides. She becomes not just a disciple (learner), but an apostle (one who is sent). She engages in the great task of the church: Evangelism.

The gospel of John, you see, invites us into a life-long journey with Jesus. As we abide with Jesus, we are disciples and learners. Yet we are also apostles. We are sent with a message. We are sent with a task. We are sent with the mission of making Jesus known throughout our neighborhoods and the world.

Is there someone in your life that needs to know the peace and joy that comes from knowing Jesus? Is there someone you can invite to come to church with you? Think about it. Pray about it. Act on it. Worship is one of the places where we meet Jesus.

And for your own edification in the faith, I encourage you to come to one of the many Bible Studies happening at Gloria Dei. Women’s studies are held Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. A men’s study happens each Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. In addition, I am teaching through portions of John’s gospel on the first and third Thursday evenings of the month from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Check our website and calendar for all the options. Holy Encounters with Jesus: they didn’t just happen in biblical times. They happen today, too, all the time.

Finally, just a reminder that our Annual Meeting is taking place this Sunday, January 30, at 11:45 in the sanctuary. This will be livestreamed on our website, but you must be present in person to vote. See you there!
