A Time to Meet Jesus

Hello Gloria Dei,

This weekend we begin the season of Advent. Through the years I’ve had numerous people ask me about Advent. What it means? Why we observe it? What is its purpose?

One of the best definitions I can come up with for Advent is simply this: Advent is “A Time to Meet Jesus.” Are you ready to meet Jesus? If Jesus were to knock on your front door right now, would you be prepared to open and say, “Come on in, Jesus”? How about into the depths of your heart?

Advent is a time to prepare our hearts and minds for the coming of Christ into our lives. It is a time to rightly prepare for the celebration of the birth of the Christ-child. And a time to know that our Savior has arrived.

I sometimes ask myself, “Why did God go to all the trouble to become a person, in the flesh? Why did God become so vulnerable to be born as a baby in a manger? Why did God come to this earth, only to die on a cross?”

The answer, of course, is Love. God has done all of this out of Love. And God continues to search us out and find us when we get lost. God’s goodness and mercy continue to follow us each and every day. Why? Out of love.

During Advent, take some time alone and dwell on the reality that God really does love you. As we come out of our National Day of Thanksgiving, pause and give thanks for the truth of God becoming flesh in the person of Jesus. For you! For you! For you!

Yes, Advent is “A Time to Meet Jesus.” Are you ready? As you take stock of your life; as you bring your confession of sin to God; as you give thanks to God for all the blessings in your life; as you center in on the amazing love that God has for you in Jesus… you become ready to meet this beautiful Savior and Lord, Jesus, the Christ.

Happy Advent!

See you in worship,

Pastor Tim
