Does The Bible Really Say That? (Week Two)

As I mentioned last week, we are in the midst of a different kind of preaching series. We are using different phrases or sayings and asking the question: “Does the Bible Really Say That?” I heard from many of you following last week’s message as we focused in on the phrase “Everything Happens for a Reason.” Instead of providing exact answers, I’m hoping these messages will provide fodder for good conversation about God and the way in which God is at work in the world. I’m glad that many of you had opportunity for thoughtful dialogue.

This weekend we will hone in on the phrase “God Won’t Give You More Than You Can Handle.” No doubt you’ve either heard it or said it. It is meant to bring comfort. I invite you to think about that phrase. What does it say about God? What implications does it have if you push it out far enough? Is it helpful? If so, how, when, and why? If not, why not?

This phrase doesn’t come directly from the Bible. However, there is a verse that many people mix up with this phrase. It is 1 Corinthians 10:13 which talks about God not tempting us without providing strength to resist the temptation. The particular context of that verse is to a Corinthian church whose people were being bombarded with, and giving into, lots of different types of temptation. And while it may sound similar, its meaning is different.

I also want to let you know that we’ve had a fabulous week of Vacation Bible School at Gloria Dei. It is so enriching to have children here all week having fun together, but most importantly, learning about God and God’s love for us in Jesus. Thanks to the parents and grandparents who made sure their kids were here. And thanks to the staff and the many adult volunteers who worked so hard to make this such a great week.

This week, be sure to be praying for our High Schoolers who will be involved all week in a local mission trip called “Love Your City; Change the World”. Jesus, our great servant, calls us to let our light shine for the glory of God. Thanks to the High School students and all involved for being the hands, feet, and voice of Christ in our city and around the world.

In addition, pray for the Confirmation Campers who will be at Camp NeSoDak this week. In the midst of God’s beautiful creation, they will enjoy Christian fellowship, all the while learning about the love and calling God has for them.

Now, An Important Reminder

NEW FACEBOOK PAGE AND INSTAGRAM

We are excited to let you know that Gloria Dei is launching a brand-new Facebook page and Instagram Account. As we continue to stay connected to one another and as we share the Good News of Jesus with the world in various ways, I strongly encourage you to like our FB page and follow us on Instagram. Again, these are new accounts, so even if you liked our previous FB page, you will need to like this new one. These accounts include VBS pictures from this past week, and there will be HS Mission Trip and Confirmation Camp updates throughout the upcoming week. Thanks!

See you in worship, either in person or online. Livestream worship is Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
