Early in 2020 Gloria Dei embarked on a special giving appeal to raise $50,000 for what we called “Ministry in Motion.” This congregation responded in great fashion, both with monetary contributions, but also with the time and talent to support this initiative. Ministry in Motion consisted of two major pieces: The purchase of a newer used bus and the buying and remodeling of a trailer called “The Mobile Hair Salon.” Through your generosity, we were able to purchase both.

Little did we know that we would be putting a “pause” on much of the in-person ministry because of COVID-19.

However, these ministries, are now up and going and I want to give all of you a little background and an update.

First, the bus. We were able to purchase a used bus, but one that is much newer and in better shape than our old one. As you know, Wednesdays are big at Gloria Dei. We have over 160 children in Church School on Wednesdays and another 170 in confirmation. Of these Wednesday students, about 100 are making use of the bus ministry. Every Wednesday afternoon, Gloria Dei picks up Elementary and Middle School kids from school and brings them to church for activities, dinner, and worship. This is an essential and exciting ministry.

Secondly, you may have heard already about the Gloria Dei Mobile Hair Salon. Through the work of Pastor Chris and a devoted Mission & Outreach team, Gloria Dei has spearheaded a Mission project to offer free styles and haircuts to those in need in the Sioux Falls community.

The trailer is complete with heat and air-conditioning, a curb-side step entrance, a handicapped accessible ramp in the rear, and LED lighting. It is outfitted with hair salon chairs, a hair washing station, a portable generator, and all the equipment necessary to provide quality haircuts and styles to those in need.

This mobile hair salon is about more than free haircuts. This about Dignity. It’s about being made in God’s Image. And it’s about sharing God’s Grace. Every one of God’s children longs for dignity. The mobile hair salon has now been launched and will find its place in the Sioux Falls community wherever there is a need to offer dignity, image, and grace through free haircuts.

KELO recently did a story on the evening news about the Gloria Dei Mobile Hair Salon. Please click here to watch the video … and thank you! Interested in being part of the pool of volunteers? Sign-up here.

By the way, the Gloria Dei bus, affectionately known as the Marshmallow because it is bright white, and the Mobile Hair Salon will be parked in our main lot this weekend. Before or after church, stop by and take a look inside.

In ministry together with you,

Pastor Tim

P.S. This weekend is Pentecost worship. The power of the Holy Spirit is at work. Wear red, the color of the day, if you are so inclined.
