The Heart of Christ

Hey there Gloria Dei!

The weather is finally looking a little better and the polar vortex is finally receding north where it belongs. I plan to take a few good, long walks outside this weekend to soak up some winter sun and breathe in some fresh air. I hope you can find a way to enjoy the warming weather, as well.

Even as I am thankful that we’re thawing out a little bit, I’m mindful of those in the southern U.S. (especially Texas) who are struggling with the recent deep-freeze. Now this weekend they will be dealing with an unusual experience of melting ice and snow. Many homes have been damaged from frozen water pipes and I’ve talked with friends in Texas who have been hopping around from house to house to shower, cook, get fresh water, etc. When they return to their homes, and as power is slowly restored, they’re returning to frozen ponds in their living rooms where the temperature inside their homes has been below freezing for a few days.

I know that you will join me in praying for those who have been impacted by this unusual natural disaster. I also know that many of you will likely ask how you can help. I’m anticipating a coordinated response from the Lutheran church coming in the next few days, so watch our Gloria Dei Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/gloriadeisd) for ways to help if any develop. In the meantime, keep praying.

As we all know, disaster comes in many forms and people all over the country and the world experience trials and trouble every day. Our sure and certain hope comes, of course, from Jesus. As we’ve been reading through the Gospel of Luke for worship, I’ve been struck by the tender care Jesus has for the most vulnerable of people. His tender care for the widow who lost her son in Luke 7, his tender care for paralyzed man in Luke 5, and even his tender care for all the poor, hungry, and persecuted as he gives his famous Sermon on the Plain in Luke 6. Jesus has a heart for those in need.

I pray that we have the same mind that was in Christ when we consider all in the world who are suffering or struggling for any reason. My prayer is that we will have the heart of Christ to meet the needs of this world, no matter how big or small.

Let’s GO Gloria Dei!
