Ash Wednesday Services and Welcome Pastor Amy Martinell

Ash Wednesday Services

When I was kid my mom and I would watch movies together. I don’t know that there was ever a movie that she didn’t fall asleep in the middle of. The last 10-15 minutes of the movie she would wake up and ask what was happening in the movie. After a while I told her, “I’m not telling you, you have to stay awake for the whole movie!” I am now my mother… The Easter story is kind of like a movie. To understand and to hear the Good news on Easter, the journey of the story from Ash Wednesday is important.

This coming Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. It marks the beginning of the Lenten Season. It starts with Ash Wednesday, 6 Wednesdays, Psalm Sunday (March 28th), Maundy Thursday (April 1st), Good Friday (April 2nd), and then Easter Sunday (April 4th). On Ash Wednesday, we hear the story again of our need for repentance and our need for a Savior. Through the weeks of Lent we hear Jesus’ words for each of us, why we are in need of a Savior. We hear about a God that loved us so much that He sent His only Son. On Maundy Thursday we receive the command for communion, and we experience Jesus’ betrayal from the very one who followed Him. Good Friday, we experience the death of our Savior on our behalf and because of our sin. AND THEN…. on Easter we hear the GOOD NEWS of the risen God. The God that conquers the grave so that we too have the same promise!

I have always loved this time of the year, even as a young child. I knew it mattered, even when I didn’t understand why. It’s important to hear the whole story again. If we fall asleep in the middle or stop listening, we miss important pieces of the why. The story isn’t as meaningful, or we find ourselves left with questions.

I invite you to hear the story once again with us at Gloria Dei. Starting this Wednesday, February 17 at 12pm or 6pm, with Ash Wednesday services. If you would like to join us online, the 6pm service will be available at www.gloriadei-sd.org/live

God Bless, Pastor Sarah
Welcome Pastor Amy Martinell

Greetings Gloria Dei! I hope your week has been good! We are excited to welcome Pastor Amy Martinell to Gloria Dei as Associate Pastor of Congregational Care.

I had an opportunity to visit with Pastor Amy this week and asked her if it would be OK to share a few of her gifts for ministry with you in the Friday Following. Pastor Amy, said, “please do”. Pastor Amy describes herself ‘as a creative and passionate pastor and preacher who keeps Christ at the center of all that she does”. And as a leader, Pastor Amy said, “I have learned it is vital that I always stay true to my faith and self in my interactions with others. I am by nature a “behind the scenes” leader. I love empowering others to use their talents and gifts in service for the church. My typical leadership style is to gather a team to help with the planning and implementation of programming. At the same time, I believe there are areas that call for pastoral authority such as preaching, leading worship, and providing leadership in times of crisis or transition. I respect this element of ordained ministry and am comfortable with the authority that comes with it. I am an organized and detail-oriented person which allows me to be an efficient and resourceful leader. I am also flexible and able to modify my leadership style to fit the situation and people I am serving”.

Again, we are excited for Pastor Amy’s arrival on March 15th as she begins her service at Gloria Dei. And we look forward to serving alongside her.

And thank you everyone for all the ways in which you serve the Lord and neighbor through the mission and ministry of Gloria Dei and in your daily lives.

God’s Blessings Always! Pastor Dwight Stensgaard
