Worship at Gloria Dei Saturdays 5:00pm, Sundays 9:00am and 10:30am

Surrounded by a Great Cloud of Witnesses

I’ll be watching the Super Bowl on Sunday, late afternoon. Maybe you will be too. I don’t particularly care who wins the game this year, as I like both the Chiefs and the Buccaneers. The game has some unique storylines… with the Chiefs being defending champs… and with Tom Brady in the big game… Again.

One of the unique things about Sunday’s game is that there will be a limited number of fans allowed inside of Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. I’ve read that there will be about 25,000 fans… and about 30,000 cutouts in the stadium seats.

As you watch the Super Bowl, pay attention to when the cameras show the seats. Take note of both the fans and the cutouts. As you do, let it be a reminder to you of all of those in your life who have been faithful friends and all those who have influenced you in your Christian faith journey.

In Hebrews Chapter 11, the author lists many biblical characters who put their faith and trust in God. He then goes on to say “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfector of our faith.” –Hebrews 12:1-2

For the players in the Super Bowl, who have played this year mostly within empty stadiums, they will be happy to have 25,000 people cheering live and in-person.

For you and me as Christians, we can be happy too that we have way more than 25,000 people cheering us on. People from every generation… some we know, many we don’t… are in the grandstands of faith rooting for us as we run with perseverance.

Let the Super Bowl be a reminder, first of all, that you are a “faith athlete”, running always with your gaze fixed on Jesus. And secondly, that you have many people supporting you, loving you, and cheering for you, as you run this journey of life with full faith and trust in God.

Give thanks for Jesus. Give thanks for being surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses.

Enjoy the game!

For this week in worship, please read Luke chapter 10. And if you come to worship this Wednesday night at 6 pm, one of our own young adults will be sharing the message with us.
