Forgiveness: Our Greatest Need

Hello Gloria Dei,

I’ve said many times that as followers of Jesus, it is vitally important to be regular in the reading of God’s Word. I’ve also said that one of my personal practices, no matter what other parts of Scripture I may be reading, is to be reading through one of the four gospels all the time.

As a congregation, we are currently reading through the gospel of Luke. Sermon texts and themes within worship will be from Luke over the next couple of months. At Christmas time, we read Luke chapter 2. Last week I focused on Jesus’ use of the word “Today” within this gospel, preaching on a text from chapter 4.

This weekend in worship we will take a look at Luke 5:17-26. If you haven’t yet, please read Luke chapters one through six and you will be fully caught up.

In this account from Luke 5, Jesus is teaching at someone’s house and it gets pretty crowded. Some friends bring a friend of theirs to Jesus for healing. The man is paralyzed. Not able to get in through the crowded front door, the man is lowered into the living room through the roof. The surprising thing about Jesus in this story is that instead of immediately healing the man physically, he begins the healing process by proclaiming to the man that his sins are forgiven.
There are many things that are important and necessary for our lives. Ask a variety of people what it is they need the most, and you will get a vast variety of answers. Jesus is claiming here that what is most needed in all of our lives is to be in a right relationship with God. And that happens through the gift of forgiveness. Every person needs God’s forgiveness.

Of course, we are in need of many things. Yet the good news that Jesus proclaims is that because of his cross and resurrection, you and I are given the gift of having our deepest need met.

Reminder:  The Annual Meeting of the congregation will take place on Sunday January 31, at 11:45 a.m. We will meet in the sanctuary. I encourage you to be here in person, but please know that we will have a Zoom option as well.

Immediately following the Annual Meeting we will convene a separate meeting, as required by our Church Constitution, to present and vote on a potential candidate for our Associate Pastor of Congregational Care Position. We anticipate both meetings combined lasting approximately 75 minutes.

We are asking that you RSVP for these meetings, letting us know if you will be here in person or via Zoom. Please note, an RSVP is not required for you to attend, but it is helpful for us to have an approximation of how many will attending in person and/or via Zoom. You can RSVP on our website or by using the following link – https://www.gloriadei-sd.org/annualmeeting
