Worship at Gloria Dei Saturdays 5:00pm, Sundays 9:00am and 10:30am

Hello Gloria Dei,

This weekend I will begin a seven-week preaching series entitled IMAGINE. Together we will be imagining both God’s call on our individual lives, but also God’s call to us corporately as a church.

The two Scripture passages we will be reading are both very short. Only one verse each. And they both talk about the importance of having a vision for the future.

In the 29th chapter of the prophet Jeremiah, God is speaking through the prophet to the Israelites who are in exile in Babylon. God tells them that they will be in exile for a while. Even so, God says, don’t lose heart. For I am with you. And one day you will return to your homeland. In Jeremiah 29:11 God says to his people, “For surely I know the plans I have for you; plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.”

As in the days of Jeremiah, the world is in exile to the powers of sin and death. We see the results of sin all over our lives, our communities, and our world. We all fall short of God’s glory. Yet God gives us a future filled with hope… “plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.”

The second verse we will read is from the Old Testament book of Proverbs. Proverbs consists of numerous instructional sayings or poems about wisdom and folly; life and death; good and evil; and many other important topics. In Proverbs 29:18 we read this: “Where there is no vision, the people perish. But happy are those who follow the teachings of God.”

Following the wisdom of Proverbs 29:18, we as God’s people at Gloria Dei need to continually be working on the vision for the future. Falling in line with the proclamation and living out of the gospel, God calls us to be creative in our visioning.

Within our IMAGINE Stewardship Campaign, we will be casting and sharing the vision for 2021 and beyond. And we are all privileged and called to be part of this important ministry. In addition, I’ve begun meeting with a team from Gloria Dei regarding some longer-term visions. Together with the church council this team will pray and vision for the future as well. “Without a vision, the people perish.”

I will see you in worship this weekend, either in person or online. Our 9:00 a.m. Sunday service is live-streamed.

And just a reminder that Church School and Nursery ministry will be available in person beginning this Sunday, October 4. Bring your children to worship, and after about 15 minutes, kids will be dismissed to their classes. We ask that parents walk their children to their classes, and then parents return to worship for the remainder of the hour.
