Seeking Your Input in the Calling of a Pastor

About a month ago I let you know that Judi Schwerin, our Faith Community Nurse and leader of our Congregational Care Team, will be retiring sometime in 2021. We will miss her dearly in this role. After much deliberation, the Church Council has approved moving forward toward the calling of an Associate Pastor to take the lead in Congregational Care upon Judi’s retirement.

We still have lots of time, but we are beginning the process. So, I’d like to ask you, the congregation members of Gloria Dei, if you have any names of ELCA pastors who you think might be a good fit for this role.

This person’s time allotment will be approximately 70% in the area of Congregational Care. This involves coordinating many of our health and small group ministries, as well as taking the lead for our Stephen Ministry program. It will include lots of phone calling, in home visits, and hospital calls. In addition to some general pastoral duties, this person will assist in pre-marriage contacts and developing a more in depth ministry to couples. He or she will also assist with new member orientation and follow-up.

This is a big role. And while caring for one another in this congregation is done by all of us, it is important to have a lead person giving oversight and expertise. We are seeking a pastor with gifts in this area of caring ministry, and one who will also be a good fit for our congregation and pastoral team.

So, if you have any recommendations of pastors you know, either within the South Dakota synod, or from another part of the country, I invite you to submit their names. We can’t promise everyone will receive an interview, but I can promise that each name will be reviewed by the synod, and then as appropriate, by the Call Committee.

You can submit names by sending an email to Pastor Dwight Stensgaard at dwight.stensgaard@gloriadei-sd.org

Thank you for your input and for your partnership in the gospel of Jesus Christ. See you in worship either in person or online. Please read the short book of Jonah in preparation for this weekend’s worship.
