Worship at Gloria Dei Saturdays 5:00pm, Sundays 9:00am and 10:30am

Shining Bright

I don’t know about you, but I’m noticing the winter days getting a bit longer. It’s not that we get more than 24 hours in a day, but it’s starting to get lighter a bit earlier, and staying lighter a bit later. It may be subtle, but it’s happening.

As we’ve begun our six month journey through the Gospel of Matthew, this week in worship we arrive at chapter 5. Jesus begins what we call “The Sermon on the Mount”. The mount is a hillside overlooking the Sea of Galilee. This past spring, together with others from Gloria Dei, I had the opportunity to stand on the Mount of the Beatitudes, as it’s now called, and to read the Sermon on the Mount. It was a spectacular moment. It was a spiritual moment. And what I love about the Sermon on the Mount is that Jesus sets out for us who we are and how it is that we are to live as residents of God’s Kingdom.

In Matthew 5:14-16 Jesus says this to us: “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts in under a basket, but on the lampstand and it give light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”

By virtue of what Christ has done for us, Jesus tells us who we are. Light for the world. You and I are recipients of the greatest gift ever. Jesus died and rose for us. Therefore we now reflect the light and love of Christ to the world. It’s who we are. It’s what we do.

I invite you to read the whole Sermon on the Mount this week. It’s only three chapters and it won’t take long. Read Matthew chapters 5, 6, and 7. And remember, Jesus doesn’t say to you, “You might be light” or “You could be light”. Rather he says, “You are the light of the world.”
Thanks for shining brightly Gloria Dei and giving more and more light, even in subtle ways, to a world which desperately needs to see, experience, and know Christ’s light.

Two quick reminders: One, the Annual Meeting is this Sunday at 11:45 in the Fellowship area. Read the Annual Report online, or pick up a hard copy at church.

And two, our Ministry in Motion Special Giving Appeal is up and running. Please consider a gift in support of our Gloria Dei bus and the new Haircut Trailer. Call me if you have questions, but this is a great cause so give generously as you are able. Click Here to make a gift or bring gift to Gloria Dei.

Together we are lighting the world for Christ.

See you in worship,
Pastor Tim
