A Good Hiding Place?

I love this photo of my great-niece, Ruby, hiding under a blanket on her parents’ bed. Her mom shared it on Instagram last week. Her mommy, Andrea, wrote, “I think Ruby needs to work a little harder at her hiding skills.”

Ruby’s trick with placing the blanket over her head is pretty cute. No doubt since she couldn’t see her mom, she was sure her mom couldn’t see her. We are like that with God …

It’s All About Jesus

Hello Gloria Dei,

Many years ago I read an author who said that in the church, as in other endeavors, it’s important to “keep the main thing the main thing.”  He went on to say that the “main thing” in the church is not a thing at all, but a person:  Jesus Christ.

I’ve tried to heed this advice in my 27 years of ordained ministry.  Jesus, God in the flesh, is to be our main focus.  One of the values we lift up at Gloria Dei is that “It’s all about Jesus. The rest is just details.”

Faith Talk Starters
Consider these questions as you live out your faith this week:
Jesus offers us a way of life different from the life the world offers. Our lives are shaped by the cross of Jesus who denied himself for the sake of the world. Shaped by that cross, we are called to live lives that bear that same shape: lives of self-denial and self-sacrifice.

While none of us will never bear the sins of the whole world, we are called by Jesus in our Gospel lesson for today to bear our own crosses. Jesus’ call for a life that follows the shape of the cross is not easy. We must not make excuses for ourselves, or let ourselves off too lightly. The cross-shaped life Jesus is asking us to live is for the sake of a world that is suffering and in need.

What hard or difficult things have you felt called to do in your life? Have you answered those calls? Have you put them aside?

Perhaps we don’t have to look much farther than our own family to see the life Jesus is calling us to. Perhaps our spouse is longing for our time and attention. Perhaps our children are overly busy and need our permission to hold still and focus on one important thing. Perhaps our aging parents are getting closer to that point of needing our care. Look around you, maybe even close. Are there people near you who are in need?
